Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME)

Friends of the Earth Middle East

FoEME is a unique organization that brings together Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli environmentalists. Its primary objective is the promotion of cooperative efforts to protect shared environmental heritage. It seeks to advance both sustainable regional development and the creation of necessary conditions for lasting peace in the region. FoEME has offices in Amman, Bethlehem, and Tel-Aviv, and is a member of Friends of the Earth International, the largest grassroots environmental organization in the world. FoEME is both an advocacy organization, conducting trans-boundary research projects and publishing joint reports and position papers, as well as a grass-roots organization promoting cross border dialogue. All of FoEME's trans-boundary projects include Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian youth, adults, researchers, mayors and municipal representatives in community work with all working together to foster platforms for dialogue to promote environmental sustainability and peace. FoEME's three co-Directors were honoured by TIME Magazine as Environmental Heroes of 2008. FoEME received a UNDP/UNEP SEED Finalist Award in 2008 and in 2009 was granted the prestigious Jeff Skoll Award for social entrepreneurship.

Highlights:

Good Water Neighbours: In 2001, FoEME established the Good Water Neighbors (GWN) project to raise awareness of the shared water problems of Palestinians, Jordanians, and Israelis. GWN has created real improvement within the water sector by building trust and understanding that has led to common problem solving and peace building among communities even in the midst of conflict. To date, 25 communities are participating in the project (8 from Jordan, 9 from Palestine and 8 from Israel). The project created youth "Water Trustees" in the 25 Palestinian, Israeli and Jordanian communities. For more information, please click here (http://www.foeme.org/projects.php?ind=32). Jordan River: In 2003, FoEME embarked on a broad campaign to raise awareness of the demise of the Lower Jordan River. This project resulted in the publication "Crossing the Jordan" by Jordanian, Israeli and Palestinian researchers. For more information, please click here (http://www.foeme.org/projects.php?ind=23). Mountain Aquifer / “Pro-Aquifer”: In 2003, FoEME began 2 research projects detailing the geographical characteristics of the Mountain Aquifer which led to a community pilot project entitled "Pro Aquifer" aiming to establish guidelines for monitoring, managing, and reducing sources of groundwater pollution in the 2 chosen pilot Israeli and Palestinian municipalities. The project strengthened technical know-how and built a network of Israeli and Palestinian water practitioners at the municipal level. Most importantly, it created a necessary platform for dialogue on this important shared water resource and created commitment within Israeli and Palestinian municipalities to improve environmental performance in their jurisdictions. Dead Sea: Since 1995, FoEME has been studying the challenges facing the Dead Sea Basin and has been calling for the need to create a comprehensive integrated regional development plan for the entire Dead Sea region. The plan should be a collaborative effort with participation of Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian, as well international interests. As part of its efforts to ensure the long-term environmental integrity of the area, FoEME is promoting registration of the Dead Sea basin with UNESCO, as either a Biosphere Reserve or a World Heritage Site.
