A contemporary North-South approach to traditional dance will be presented during TIGMMI, a Mediterranean artistic performance to take place in the Portuguese city, Évora on the 27th of March.
The performance is part of an artistic project co-financed by the Anna Lindh Foundation in the framework of its call for proposals and organised by Associação para a Promoção de Música e Dança (PédeXumbo), member of the Anna Lindh Portuguese Network, in collaboration with Cie 11.ORG (Morocco) and Babil Association (Turkey).
The artistic performance TGMMI is part of a 10 months project aiming at promoting the traditional Mediterranean dances with a contemporary look through the exchange of traditional choreographies, research folk dances, and artistic creation.
The first part of the project consisted in a meeting seminar about the state of folk dances and contemporary dance in the partner countries followed by a Euromed Dance Platform including traditional dance workshops and ball, and which resulted in the creation of a new dance piece TIGMMI to be presented by the Moroccan choreographer, Brahim Sourny. "In the Berber language, Tigmmi means the Mother house. To me it symbolizes the beginning of things, the starting point, we need to return to our origins to know where we come from and where we are going to”, explain the Moroccan choreographer while mentioning how this project helped in reviving the societies roots by creating a dance with a strong social dimension.
As a part of the project, a new website was created with the aim to facilitate dialogue between artists, musicians and dancers from both shores of the Mediterranean on issues related to the contemporary approach of traditional dance.
