The Anna Lindh Foundation supports the young people of Alexandria in organizing the very first Intercultural Tourism Day

Following the historic events in Egypt at the start of the year, young people of Alexandria are joining efforts to rebuilding their society, with a focus on promoting the city as an attractive destination for tourism and exchange across cultures. Under the banner of ‘Mediterranean Pride’, more than one hundred young Alexandrians will organize a cultural event at the renowned Qaitbey Citadel, open to the city’s citizens and international community, and aimed at attracting people from around the region and wider world to visit Egypt and contribute to the country’s economic regeneration through tourism.

Speaking about the new initiative, the leader of Mediterranean Pride said: “From this historical place in Alexandria, which was once the center of illumination to the entire world, we, as new Egyptians, are calling for a new Egypt that opens its arms to every free human being to visit its free lands”.

Andreu Claret, Executive Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation, which has its international headquarters in the city of Alexandria, said: “We are very proud to have the opportunity to support the young people of Alexandria in working together to build a democratic and vibrant civil society in Egypt.”

The one day event will feature a number of shows highlighting the cultural and historical richness of Egypt. The programme will include choirs, activities for kids, poetry, traditional dancing in addition to performances by Egyptian Music Bands.

Through its civil society network in 43 countries, the Anna Lindh Foundation will help these young Alexandrians in conveying their voice to people from the other shore of the Mediterranean to visit Egypt and share with Egyptians this new era of freedom and prosperity.

The Foundation’s involvement in the Intercultural Tourism Day initiative is part of the headquarters’ response to the historic events taking place across the Arab region since the beginning of the Year. The initiative was presented on 7th March by the Foundation’s Executive Director to representatives of civil society groups gathering for a general meeting of the ‘Anna Lindh Egyptian National Network’ at the Bibliotheca Alexandria, Head of the Foundation’s Network in Egypt. In addition to the challenge of regenerating the tourist industry, members of the Egyptian National Network – which brings together civil society groups from across the country – also discussed the issues related to the development of initiatives of non-governmental organizations and support for civil society activities in different parts and regions of the country.

This event is also supported by Alex Agenda in collaboration with the other partners
