With the support of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Anna Lindh Foundation has recently published a new manual for trainers on "Conflict Resolution and Cultural Cooperation". It presents the outcomes of two Euro-Mediterranean workshops on conflict settlement through cultural cooperation, which took place in 2007 in Istanbul and Amsterdam.
The publication represents an efficient and clear tool for trainers committed in the context of conflict resolution. It includes four main sections. The first section "Understanding Conflicts" analyses the different approaches to conflicts, including their possible forms, levels, interpretation and resolution. The second section "Understanding Culture and Conflicts" focuses on the links between culture and conflicts, and outlines both the negative and positive influence of cultural elements on conflict. The third section "Culture, Conflict and Arts" provides an overview on some case studies into two different geopolitical conflict situations; the Northern Ireland Troubles and the Cypriot issue, and highlights some cultural initiatives carried out to help in solving the crises. The fourth and last section puts forward the Drama as a tool for conflict resolution, and represents drama methods which can be used to reflect on conflict and culture.
A number of professional trainers from the Euromed region have contributed to the manual. It was published into the three official languages of the Anna Lindh Foundation, English, French and Arabic and will be widely distributed to civil society organizations within the region.
