‘Diversity and Elections’ Training for Egyptian Journalists by Media Diversity Institute

In the framework of the Media Diversity Institute project, "REBUILDING POST-REVOLUTION EGYPTIAN MEDIA: EMBRACING FREE EXPRESSION, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS" which aims toencourage the emergence of responsible Egyptian media which are based on international standards and principles of free expression, diversity, inclusiveness, transparency and public accountability.

The UK based Media Diversity Institute is to hold a training course for Egyptian journalists on the theme of ‘Diversity and Elections’, in Cairo from September 11 to September 17, 2011.  The objectives of the course are to:

  1. Work with the journalists on how to widen the national debate to include more elements of society.
  2. Encourage the trainees to expand their vision of their community as a diverse society.
  3. Help the trainees understand the core issues globally with respect to different diversity issues.
  4. Assist the trainees to understand how to report on issues of diversity during elections.
  5. Produce high quality articles that can be placed in the Egyptian press.

The training will consist of:

  1. Two initial days of theoretical training on how to write about diversity and elections.
  2. Four days of practical training, working in groups, and guided by the trainers, to produce stories for publishing.
  3. A final day of analysis, discussion and conclusions.

Participant Selection Criteria:

  1. Interest in writing or covering topics related to diversity.
  2. Commitment to attend both the theoretical training and subsequent practical training period (totaling 7 days).
  3. Practical experience of between 3-5 years in the Egyptian press.
  4. Commitment to deliver a preliminary version of an article at the end of the fifth day of training to be translated into English so that the trainers can comment on/edit them.
  5. For there to be a possibility that the article produced during the training will be published in the media outlet where the trainee works.


Of the total number of places available, 6 places have been allocated for journalists who work outside of Cairo. MDI will cover all travel and accommodation expenses for those journalists who live outside of Cairo, and also for any travel required to produce stories.
 
Consecutive translation will be available from English into Arabic and vice versa.
