For the 2009 edition, there are five award categories. The submitted item must have appeared in media (print; online media; radio; television) between 1 January 2008 and 15 July 2009.

1) Award for Printed Articles
Written articles published in a publication, newspaper or magazine whether in its printed or online version

2) Award for Blogs
Blog posts published online on cross-cultural issues by journalists and bloggers

3) Award for Radio Productions
Radio items produced by journalists

4) Award for Television Productions
Television programmes presented or produced by journalists

5) Special Recognition for Conflict Reporting
Written articles, radio or television items produced on a conflict or war in the region
