Tamer Institute for Community Education, member of the Anna Lindh Foundation's Palestinian Network, won today the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) of 2009. The Institute, which aims to promote reading in the West Bank and Gaza, is also the Palestinian Host Institution of the Children’s Literature Programme of the Anna Lindh Foundation.
The jury applauded the exceptional efforts of the Institute and highlighted: “Tamer Institute has during two decades stimulated Palestinian children’s reading and creativity with endurance, courage and wealth of ideas. Under difficult circumstances, they are managing reading promotional activities that are unusually broad and versatile. In the spirit of Astrid Lindgren, the Tamer institute sees the power of words and the force of the story and of fantasy, as important keys for life, self-esteem and tolerance".
This year more nominations than ever were received by the ALMA jury: 153 nominees from 60 countries and 6 continents.
The prize which is amounted to 5 million SEK will be handed out during a ceremony to be held in May in Stockholm, Sweden.
The ALMA prize was created by the Swedish government in memory of Astrid Lindgren and is considered to be one of the biggest children’s and youth literature prizes in the world.
