ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN: AN INTERCULTURAL WEEK IN LATVIA

From 20 to 30 November 2009, the members of the Latvian network of Anna Lindh Foundation has organized, in cooperation with a range of other partners, an Intercultural Week entitled “On the Other Side of the Mediterranean”. The main aim of the project was to provide the Latvian society with information, raise their awareness and increase understanding about the existing social and cultural diversity of the South and East Mediterranean coast countries.

• An Intercultural Week took place in 9 different cities in Latvia in the framework of the Anna Lindh Common Operations and in the context of the Network Strategic Development Scheme

• The week included 24 different activities among which featured food presentations, dance workshops, language classes, competitions, exhibitions, film evenings, concerts, poetry readings, meetings with religious leaders as well as discussions with representatives from Euro-Med region

• Around 1500 people attended the various activities of the Euro-Med Week. The most popular was the central event of the Week – an Intercultural evening, attended by 400 people and which took place in a stylish café in Riga with dancing rooms, exhibition hall, separate place for showing films and a separate room for in-formal talks

• The Common Operation organized by the Latvian network is considered to be a great success as it contributed to further strengthening and consolidating the Network, promoting the Anna Lindh Foundation and Euro-Med cooperation in Latvia
