Anna Lindh Foundation holds in Copenhagen a conference

A two-days Conference on ’Education for Inter-cultural Understanding and Dialogue’ was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The conference was attended by André Azoulay, president of the Foundation and gathered a number of experts and practitioners in education and intercultural dialogue. Participants shared their knowledge and experiences on Curriculum and Educational Materials Development; collaboration between Institutions of Higher Education and Student Exchange Programmes; and Religion and Cultural Diversity.

In his speech during the opening ceremony, André Azoulay reminded the audience of the status held by the Foundation in promoting the ideological and socio-cultural dialogue in the Mediterranean union. "The Foundation will issue by the end of this year two books on education and instruction in four languages, namely Arabic, French, English and Spanish. These books deal with the practical aspect in the education of religious diversity, adopting a simple pedagogical method which helps in reading references which deal with the varied dialogue between cultures", said Azoulay. These books will be at the disposal of the ministries of education, various institutions and the civil society organizations concerned with the educational field. The books will also provide topics for workshops and discussions organized in 43 countries in the Euro-Mediterranean partnership.

Azoulay also explained how the Foundation focused its efforts on the program of education to promote dialogue between cultures and understanding between religions. These efforts fall within the framework of implementing the recommendations issued by the "Conference on Fostering Dialogue among Cultures and Civilizations through Concrete and Sustained Action," held in Rabat in 2005. Azoulay reiterates the importance of coordinating between all parties concerned aiming at protecting and achieving the success of these initiatives which are carried out in the world to promote the dialogue between cultures and religions. He pointed out that such initiatives will not become legitimate unless a fair resolution for the Middle East crisis is reached, and the tragedies witnessed by the area are ended.

The conference is a follow-up to the "Conference on Fostering Dialogue among Cultures and Civilizations through Concrete and Sustained Action," held in Rabat, Morocco, in June 2005. It aimed to further the debate with a specific focus on education. It is convened by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with UNESCO, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the Council of Europe, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), the UN Alliance of Civilizations and the Anna Lindh Foundation.
