10 information specialists will gather in Cairo on 5 and 6 December to launch the Anna Lindh Foundation supported project “Tahqiq Sahafi: Cultural Journalism and investigations in the Mediterranean”.
The main aim of the project is to produce and publish, through 5 media partners, journalistic material dealing with a crucial theme: youth in the Mediterranean.
The project is supported by the Anna Lindh Foundation in the framework of its call for proposal, and organised by member organisations of its national networks; Babelmed (Italy) and Fondation René Seydoux (France), in collaboration with l’Orient le Jour (Lebanon), le Journal Hebdomadaire (Morocco), Ramattan News Agency (Palestine) and Bianet (Turkey).
“Tahqiq Sahafi” is an original experience of independent journalism. It’s an antidote to struggle against reciprocal misunderstandings and ignorance at a time when globalisation tends to excessively simplify our realities. The investigations will take place in 11 countries: Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Malta and France.
The following issues have been identified for the investigative report on Youth in the Mediterranean.
« Portrait of a Generation »
These investigations will enable to trace, from a comparative perspective, the portrait of young people of 20 to 30 years old in Europe and in the Mediterranean.
« Young people facing their future. Immigration: a new «war »?
This investigation will deal with the diverse realities of migration in the Mediterranean, to put the phenomenon of illegal immigration into perspective.
« Young people facing their future. Being 20 years old in the rubble»
This theme will bring the occasion to approach the youth of three countries: Algeria, Lebanon and Palestine – who have recently experienced war or violent conflict situations.
« Cultural diversity in urban space»
This series of investigations aims to guarantee a greater visibility, circulation and promotion of cultural production and artistic creativity resulting from migration.
The series of reportages will be conducted by 12 young journalists who will produce 86 articles. The articles will be published in four languages (English, French, Arabic, and Turkish) and in a large number of European and Mediterranean countries. The first series of investigations will be published as from February 2010. The latter will be put online quite regularly on Babelmed.net and on the websites of the other media partners of the project.
