Media Meeting in Stockholm

Date:
21 Sep 2009

The Anna Lindh Foundation co-organised with the Euro-Med Media Task Force a preparation meeting for the Forum 2010. The Euro-Med Media Task Force is a network of over 500 editors and journalists supported by the European Commission and involved in consultation on issues related to intercultural policies and initiatives.

Since its establishment in 2005, the Media Task Force Network has been involved in discussion on a range of issues and topics, including freedom o press, responding to intercultural tensions and reporting on terrorism, and have participated in the preparation of forums including Barcelona + 10 (2005) and the UN Alliance of Civilizations Forum (2009).

As part of the three day meeting of the Media Task Force in Stockholm, held under the Swedish Presidency of the European Union from 20 to 23 September 2009, a working group was organized to develop ideas on the preparation of the Anna Lindh Forum 2010, with a focus on a media activity which could take place within the Forum’s framework.

The core of the meeting focused on the selection of a theme for the media meeting at the Forum 2010 with broad issues raised including ‘media and responsibility’ and ‘how the media can help or harm intercultural dialogue’ which could form an important background to the proposed specific topic of ‘Reporting on Migration’.

Within the discussion on the theme of ‘reporting on migration’, three key sub-topics were developed which could form a basis for the debate at Forum 2010: access to information; engaging audiences; responsible reporting.

As part of the follow-up to the Stockholm meeting, mapping work is also being carried out to identify good practice case-studies in civil society-led media initiatives, ranging from media literacy projects
