About the Euro-Med Award 2009

About the Award 2009

The Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for Dialogue between Cultures (ALF) and the Fondazione Mediterraneo (FM), are launching the fourth edition of the Euro-Mediterranean Award for Dialogue Between Cultures. This annual award, which is to be bestowed by the 43 ALF National Networks, will recognise the achievements of individuals and organizations that have been at the forefront of promoting Dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

Candidates for the Award can be proposed either as an individual or as the representative of an organization, and must bear nationality of one of the 43 member countries of the Euro-Med Partnership, or of its observer countries (Libya and Sudan). As youth, women and migrants are the key target groups of the Foundation’s scope of work, special attention will be given to candidates who have actively worked or implement projects with these groups.

The selection of the winner of the Euro-Med Award is a participatory process which involves the Heads of the Networks and the members alike. The initial selection of the 5 finalists for the award is carried out by the Heads of the National Networks. And the final selection of the winner of the award is carried out by the members of the National Networks through an online voting system, which aims at fostering the sense of belonging and commitment of members to the work of the National Networks. Also, this will actively mobilize the national networks around a common cause by selecting together the winner of the Award. Last but not least, this system has an added value which will give both credibility and visibility to the Award.

For the fourth edition, the selection process will work as follows:

  • National Network Members from 43 countries nominate candidates for the Award.
  • Heads of National Network will select the 5 finalists based on the achievements of the last 3 years focusing on a specific best practice/project submitted.
  • The network members in the 43 countries will vote online for the winner. The candidate that gets the majority of votes within a National Network will be the candidate of that respective Network for the Award.
  • Finally, the candidate who is most voted out of the forty-three Networks will get the Award.

The Award winner will receive a trophy at a prestigious event, and will participate in two National Network events, one of which must be organized in a Southern Mediterranean country.

Award Theme for 2009

In light of the consequences of the Gaza War and the economic crisis on civil society and intercultural relations in the Euro-Med space, the members of the Presidency of the Jury selected the theme of Intercultural Dialogue for Peace and Coexistence for this year’s edition. The choice of the theme of this year’s award matured in the framework of the call Restore Trust, Rebuild Bridges issued together with the Alliance of Civilizations and taking into account that 2009 is the International Year of Reconciliation.

Candidates should prove to contribute to re-establish confidence in social, political and cultural dialogue as the major effective way to address conflicts in the Euro-Med Space. As a consequence of the recent conflict, the gap in mutual perceptions between societies of our region has widened, tensions among communities inside many countries have increased, acts of violence, intolerance, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism have unsettled several countries and confidence in a shared common future of peace and justice has lost ground. At the same time, the global economic crisis is jeopardizing intercultural relations and feeding the arguments of xenophobia.

Candidates for the award should contribute to non-violent resolution of conflicts, opening of reconciliation processes, mutual recognition in dignity and justice and creation of spaces of coexistence between different communities in areas affected by conflicts and tensions.
