Baltic-Mediterranean Spring Festival in Latvia

From May 19 until May 30 the Latvian Network of ALF is implementing a Common Operation - "Baltic-Mediterranean Spring Festival". In the framework of the festival 21 different event will take place in 7 places in Latvia (Riga, Liepaja, Daugavpils, Valmiera, tukums, Saldus and Aluksne) - EuroMed food cooking classes, dance performances and workshops, language classes, exhibitions, film evenings, concerts, poetry readings, lectures and meetings with interesting people from the region (religious leaders, journalists, artists).

The opening event of the Festival is "EuroMed Breakfast" (May 19), which gathers representatives from embassies, state institutions and civil society to discuss the relevance of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation for Latvia.

The central of event of the Festival is "EuroMed Intercultural evening" (May 26) gathering several hundreds of people in a stylish café in Riga with dancing rooms, exhibition hall, room for screening films and a small stage for performances and carrying out meetings with experts.

Although Latvia is far from the Mediterranean Sea, the main aim of the project is to provide the society with information, raise their awareness and increase understanding about the existing social and cultural diversity of the South and East Mediterranean coast countries as well as to inform about possibilities to cooperate with this region.

Annual Meeting of Latvian ALF Network - 4-5 February 2011

The Annual Meeting of Latvian Network will be held 4-5 February 2011 in a guesthouse Dole, near Riga. The main aim of the meeting is to gather members of the Latvian Network, enhance partnership and work out concrete ideas for Common Operation - Baltic-Mediterranean Spring festival, which is planned for 20-30 May 2011. It will be implemented in cooperation with Estonian and Lithuanian national Networks. The meeting will serve also as a good chance for Network consolidation and integration.

Study visit/travel competition “1001 Faces of the Mediterranean”

In April 2010 ALF Latvian network is implementing an initiative – a study visit/travel competition “1001 faces of the Mediterranean”. As part of this initiative 2 students, the winners of travel plan competition, will have the chance to travel to 2 Mediterranean countries for up to two weeks – Turkey and Israel – and will share their experiences with the help of blog on the website of ALN Latvian network. The winners of competition among dozens of applications were selected according to originality of their travel plans and methods of interaction with local people.

The main idea of this competition is to show the Latvian society the Mediterranean region from a non-typical and non-touristic perspective and promote intercultural dialogue.

One of the winners, Kristine Visnevska, a student of electronics from Riga Technical University will visit Turkey from 9-th of April until 20-th of April 2010. Her travel route will be Istanbul – Bursa – Kytahya – Konya – Nigde – Kayseri – Sivas – Samsun – Sinap – Ankara – Istanbul. As this will be the first trip of Kristine in this region (and a Muslim country), her emphasis during the trip will be on observing everyday life of people. She will try to avoid main touristic places, be hosted in homes of locals (by couchsurfing) and make small interviews on different topics with locals. As part of the visit, she will visit also one of ALF network organizations in Ankara – System&Generation. She will be hosted by S&G Youth House where EVS Volunteers of Youth Caravan Project "You There Youth Here" are accomodated.

Another winner, Ildze Pravorne, a student of Theology of Latvian University, will visit Israel from 19-th of April until 28-th of April. Her travel route will be Telaviv- Jerusalem – Cfata – Aful – Akko – Ein Gedi – Beersheba – Bet Guvrin – Tel Aviv – Jaffa – Tel Aviv. During her trip Ildze is planning to visit many interesting places, observe traditions, stay in homes of local people and also visit some organizations (‘Combatants for Peace”).

This project is created as part of cooperation between ALF Latvian network, Latvian national airline company Airbaltic and Turkish and Israeli embassies. Travellers get the chance to fly for free by Airbaltic to chosen destinations and receive a small travel money from ALF Latvian network and embassies.

Training course „Do It With EuroMed!”

25-28 February 2010 ALF Latvian national network together with two other organizations organized a training course for youth organizations from Latvia that are interested to cooperate with organizations from EuroMed countries.

During this non-formal education training course 20 participants had the chance to gain new knowledge and skills on how to create projects with partners from EuroMed region and had the chance to find our many interesting things about the cultures of the region that they did not know before. Apart from presentations, work in groups, simulation games, forum theatre and discussions, participants had the chance to get the “sense” of Mediterranean by listening to music, learning dances, watching films, eating dishes from EuroMed cuisine and meeting with experts that come from this region.

Project was supported by the Head of the Network institution of ALF in Latvia - the Agency of International Programs for Youth. ALF National Network was providing a blogger/raporteur for the training. Thanks to her participation the learning outcomes from the training are shared with wider public through blog on our website – www.annaslindesfonds.lv

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN: AN INTERCULTURAL WEEK IN LATVIA

From 20 to 30 November 2009, the members of the Latvian network of Anna Lindh Foundation has organized, in cooperation with a range of other partners, an Intercultural Week entitled “On the Other Side of the Mediterranean”. The main aim of the project was to provide the Latvian society with information, raise their awareness and increase understanding about the existing social and cultural diversity of the South and East Mediterranean coast countries.

• An Intercultural Week took place in 9 different cities in Latvia in the framework of the Anna Lindh Common Operations and in the context of the Network Strategic Development Scheme

• The week included 24 different activities among which featured food presentations, dance workshops, language classes, competitions, exhibitions, film evenings, concerts, poetry readings, meetings with religious leaders as well as discussions with representatives from Euro-Med region

• Around 1500 people attended the various activities of the Euro-Med Week. The most popular was the central event of the Week – an Intercultural evening, attended by 400 people and which took place in a stylish café in Riga with dancing rooms, exhibition hall, separate place for showing films and a separate room for in-formal talks

• The Common Operation organized by the Latvian network is considered to be a great success as it contributed to further strengthening and consolidating the Network, promoting the Anna Lindh Foundation and Euro-Med cooperation in Latvia
