Dear Sir,

I read with interest in yesterday’s edition of Al-Masry Al-Youm the article related to Farah El-Bahr Festival which will take place in Alexandria on 4 and 5 November 2010, and I thank you for your interest in the Anna Lindh Foundation’s activities.

First of all, allow me to explain the programme, and the purpose of this Festival which offers to the Alexandrian and Egyptian civil society an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity on the local and the regional level.

This is the 3^rd Edition of Farah El-Bahr Festival which will see the participation of musical bands and cultural groups from Spain, Belgium, Germany and Egypt, in addition to a wide range of activities for children organised by civil society organisations in Egypt.

We organise the Festival in collaboration with the Egyptian Tourist Authority as well as the Anna Lindh Egyptian Civil Society Network which is coordinated by Ambassador Aly Maher of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.  Our objective is to offer the city of Alexandria the opportunity to enjoy with two days of music and other cultural activities which aim at promoting exchanges and dialogue between European and Egyptian artists.

Any other version about the programme and the objective of Farah El Bahr Festival is based on information which does not correspond to the reality as highlighted in a statement of Ambassador Aly Maher posted on our webpage and saying that any other interpretation “aims at causing damage and harming the Festival which in fact serves the Egyptian Youth and shows its pride in belonging to the Mediterranean Region”. 

This was also the case for last year Edition of Farah El-Bahr Festival which was a great success with the participation of over 5000 persons and involved musical and artistic groups from Greece, Egypt and Palestine.

The Palestinian presence last year was very successful and was in line with the commitment of the Anna Lindh Foundation with the Palestinian civil society. The Palestinian Consul in Alexandria, His Excellency Jamal Al-Jamal, send me a letter today, underlining that the Festival of last year was “a good chance for presenting folk, tradictional Palestinian activities and trends in Alexandria” and reiterated “the support of the Palestinian Authority to the Anna Lindh Foundation work at the local and regional level, as one of its founding partners”.

I would like to reiterate my deep esteem and consideration and I remain at your disposal for any additional information you may need about the activities of the Anna Lindh Foundation.

السيد المحترم ،

لقد قرأت باهتمام المقال الذى نشر بالأمس فى جريدة المصرى اليوم و المتعلق بمهرجان فرح البحر الذى يقام فى الإسكندرية يومي 4 و 5 من نوفمبر 2010، و أشكركم على اهتمامكم بأنشطة مؤسسة آنا ليند.

أولا، أود ان اوضح لكم الهدف من هذه الاحتفالية و برنامج المهرجان و الذى يتيح فرصة للمجتمع المدنى المصرى و السكندرى  للاحتفال بمظاهر التنوع الثقافى سواء على الصعيد المحلى او الاقليمى.

فهذا هو الاصدار الثالث لمهرجان فرح البحر و الذى سيشهد مشاركة فرق موسيقية و مجموعات ثقافية من كلا من أسبانيا و بلجيكا و ألمانيا و مصر، بالاضافة الى عدد كبير من الانشطة الموجهة للاطفال و الذى يقوم بتنظيمها منظمات المجتمع المدنى فى مصر.

ننظم المهرجان بالتعاون مع الهيئة المصرية لتنشيط السياحة و شبكة آنا ليند المصرية للمجتمع المدنى و الذى يقوم بتنسيقها السفير على ماهر من مكتبة الاسكندرية. و نحن نهدف من خلال هذا المهرجان ان نمنح الفرصة لمدينة و أهل الاسكندرية للاستمتاع على مدار يومين بعروض موسيقية و أنشطة ثقافية تهدف الى تعزيز التبادل و الحوار بين الفناين الاوروبيين و المصريين.

و فى هذا الصدد، فان اى تفسير آخر للبرنامج او لأهداف مهرجان فرح البحر فهو مبنى على معلومات لا تمط بصلة للواقع، و هذا ما أكده بيان السفير على ماهر و الذى تم نشره على الموقع الالكترونى للمؤسسة و الذى ينص على ان اى تفسير آخر "فهو يهدف الى الحاق الضرر بالمهرجان الذى هو فى حقيقة الامر يخدم الشباب المصرى و يظهر فخر الانتماء الى منطقة البحر المتوسط".

و كان هذا ايضا الحال بالنسبة لاحتفلية العام السابق و التى حظيت بنجاح كبير و شارك بها اكثر من 5000 شخص بالاضافة الى فرق فنية و موسيقية من اليونان و مصر و فلسطين.

فالمشاركة الفلسطينية العام السابق كانت ناجحة جدا و جاءت متماشية مع التزامات مؤسسة آنا ليند تجاه المجتمع المدنى الفلسطينى. فلقد بعث لى اليوم سعادة القنصل جمال الجمل، القنصل العام لفلسطين بالاسكندرية، خطاب  يؤكد على ان مهرجان العام السابق كان "فرصة جيدة لعرض الفلكلور و الانشطة التقليدية الفلسطينية فى الاسكندرية"، كما كرر سيادة القنصل العام "دعم السلطة الفلسطينية لعمل مؤسسة آنا ليند على الصعيد المحلى و الاقليمى، و ذلك كونها احدى الشركاء المؤسسين  لمؤسسة آنا ليند".

Around thirty representatives of the Anna Lindh Civil Society Network in Egypt gathered in Alexandria at the end of last month for a capacity-building seminar focused on project development.

Through working sessions delivered by trainers and experts, the Network Members also had the opportunity to create strategies for communication and partnership-building, as well as working on proposals for several new cooperation initiatives with partners in other parts of the Region.
