The Mediterranean Institute has been nominated the Head of Network of the Maltese national network. The main objective of the Institute is to promote Mediterranean studies in both arts and social sciences through a holistic understanding of this historic region, its culture and its peoples. Interdisciplinary courses cover a broad range of subject areas: Anthropology, Geography, Hispanic Studies, History of Mediterranean Civilization, Music Studies, Near Eastern Studies and Theatre Studies. The Institute disseminates information through networking, conferences and publications, particularly the Journal of Mediterranean Studies.

To date, the Maltese network consists of 15 organizations. Most of these institutions work in the area of art.
